Congress passed a rule in 2022 that limited oil and gas drilling on about half of a huge, roughly 23-million-acre stretch of federal land on Alaska's North Slope, in order to protect wildlife and the hunting and fishing that local communities depend on. This resolution cancels that 2022 rule and puts an earlier, 2020 rule back in place instead, which opens up more of that land to oil and gas companies for leasing and drilling. In practice, that means energy companies get access to areas that had been off-limits, while the extra protections for wildlife habitat and subsistence activities in those areas go away.
