S.J.Res. 7 · Science, Technology, Communications
A joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Federal Communications Commission relating to "Addressing the Homework Gap Through the E-Rate Program".
Introduced Jan 27, 2025 · Held at the desk.
What does this mean?

The FCC (the federal agency that regulates phone, internet, and TV services) created a rule last August letting schools and libraries use E-Rate funding — a federal program that gives them discounts on internet and phone services — to buy discounted Wi-Fi hotspots and mobile data plans that students, school staff, and library patrons could take home. The idea was to help students who don't have internet access at home get online for schoolwork. This resolution would cancel that rule entirely, meaning schools and libraries would no longer be able to use E-Rate discounts to provide those take-home hotspots and mobile internet devices.
