Congress used a special procedure to cancel an EPA rule that had allowed power plants in Indiana to release more nitrogen oxide pollution (a smog- and soot-forming gas) into the air during the summer months of 2024 and beyond. Nitrogen oxide pollution can drift across state lines and contribute to smog and health problems in other states, which is why the EPA had set limits on it under a program called the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule. By striking down the EPA's rule that loosened those limits for Indiana's electricity-generating plants, this resolution would put the stricter, earlier pollution limits back in place for those plants.
