S.J.Res. 54 · International Affairs
A joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval of the proposed foreign military sale to the Government of the United Arab Emirates of certain defense articles and services.
Introduced May 15, 2025 · Motion to discharge Senate Committee on Foreign Relations rejected by Yea-Nay Vote. 39 - 56. Record Vote Number: 307.
What does this mean?

Normally, when the U.S. government approves selling weapons or military equipment to another country, Congress has a window of time to object before the sale goes through. This resolution is Congress using that power to say no to a specific planned sale of weapons and military-related services to the United Arab Emirates. If passed, it would block that particular arms deal from happening, meaning the UAE would not receive the specific defense equipment or services that had been proposed. It does not affect other, separate arms sales or the broader U.S. relationship with the UAE — only this one transaction.
