S.J.Res. 49 · Foreign Trade and International Finance
A joint resolution terminating the national emergency declared to impose global tariffs.
Introduced Apr 10, 2025 · Motion to table the motion to reconsider the vote by which S.J. Res. 49 failed of passage (Record Vote No. 225) agreed to in Senate by Yea-Nay Vote. 50 - 49. Record Vote Number: 226.
What does this mean?

In April 2025, President Trump declared a national emergency to justify placing a 10% tariff (an import tax) on most goods brought into the U.S. from other countries, plus extra tariffs on certain trading partners. This resolution would cancel that emergency declaration, which would end those tariffs. If passed, businesses that import foreign goods would no longer pay those added taxes, and the higher costs that often get passed on to consumers through pricier products would go away as well.
