S.J.Res. 18 · Finance and Financial Sector
A joint resolution disapproving the rule submitted by the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection relating to "Overdraft Lending: Very Large Financial Institutions".
Introduced Feb 13, 2025 · Became law
What does this mean?

Big banks (the very large ones) recently got a new rule telling them how much they can charge customers who overdraw their checking accounts—basically spend more money than they have. That rule said banks must either cap the fee at $5, justify a higher fee, or treat the overdraft like a loan and give customers the same upfront cost disclosures required for credit cards and other loans. This resolution would cancel that rule entirely, meaning those specific limits and disclosure requirements would no longer apply, and banks would go back to whatever overdraft fee practices were in place before the rule existed.
