S.J.Res. 11 · Public Lands and Natural Resources
A joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management relating to "Protection of Marine Archaeological Resources".
Introduced Feb 4, 2025 · Became law
What does this mean?

Companies that drill for oil and gas in ocean waters controlled by the federal government currently have to submit a report checking for archaeological remains—like old shipwrecks or other historical artifacts at least 50 years old—every time they propose a new drilling project. This resolution would cancel that requirement. Instead, drilling companies would only need to do that archaeological check if a federal regulator overseeing offshore drilling specifically suspects there might be historical remains in that particular area.
