Amendment SA 4070 agreed to in Senate by Unanimous Consent.
Most aircraft would be required to carry equipment that shows pilots the location of nearby planes and traffic warnings in real time, something not currently mandated. It also tightens the rules for when government flights (like certain military or law enforcement missions) can skip broadcasting their own location to air traffic control, cutting back on exceptions and adding extra reporting when they're used, plus a repeal of a 2025 exemption that let certain military helicopters in the Washington, DC area fly without broadcasting their location. The bill also sets up regular audits and reviews — by government watchdogs and a new coordination office within the FAA (the agency that regulates U.S. air travel) — to check how well the military and the FAA share safety information and manage shared airspace near airports, aiming to catch potential safety gaps between civilian and military flight operations.
