TAKE IT DOWN Act
Introduced Jan 16, 2025 · Became law
What does this mean?

Sharing or threatening to share sexually explicit images or videos of someone without their permission — including realistic AI-generated fakes — becomes a federal crime, punishable by fines and prison time, whether the victim is an adult or a minor. Websites and apps built around user posts, like social media platforms, are now required to set up a way for victims to report these images and must take them down within 48 hours of getting that report. This affects anyone who might have such content posted about them, as well as the platforms hosting user content, which now have a legal obligation to respond quickly or face consequences.
