H.R. 973 · Commerce
Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act
Introduced Feb 4, 2025 · Received in the Senate.
What does this mean?

If you own or sell electric bikes, electric scooters, or similar battery-powered rides, this law would require the batteries in them to meet specific safety standards already developed by a group of standards organizations in the U.S. and Canada. The Consumer Product Safety Commission — the federal agency that sets safety rules for everyday products and can recall dangerous ones — would be required to write a formal rule making those standards mandatory rather than optional. In practice, this means manufacturers and sellers of these devices would have to make sure their batteries pass those safety tests, which is aimed at reducing risks like battery fires, before the products can be sold.
