H.R. 9497 · Water Resources Development
Water Resources Development Act of 2026
Introduced Jun 29, 2026 · Received in the Senate.
What does this mean?

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency that builds and maintains things like dams, levees, harbors, and shipping channels, would get Congress's approval to study and carry out a long list of water projects around the country. These include keeping ports and waterways deep enough for ships, reducing damage from floods and storms, restoring wetlands and fish habitats, protecting shorelines, dealing with harmful algae blooms, repairing dams, managing recreation areas, and supporting water supply and storage. The bill also tells the Corps to create a new office focused on finding different ways to get construction projects done faster, and to write a rule allowing certain harbor or river improvements that are expected to have only minor environmental effects to move forward under a simpler, pre-approved process. People who live near affected waterways, businesses that depend on ports and shipping, and communities exposed to flooding or storm damage are the ones most directly touched by the projects it covers.
