H.R. 859 · Commerce
Informing Consumers about Smart Devices Act
Introduced Jan 31, 2025 · Received in the Senate. Read twice. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 64.
What does this mean?

If you buy a smart device — think smart speakers, smart doorbells, or internet-connected appliances — that has a hidden camera or microphone built in, the manufacturer would have to tell you about it before you buy it, not after. This wouldn't apply to things like phones or laptops, since everyone already expects those to have cameras and microphones. The idea is to make sure shoppers aren't caught off guard discovering a device can see or hear them only after they've already brought it home.
