H.R. 825 · Commerce
Assisting Small Businesses Not Fraudsters Act
Introduced Jan 28, 2025 · Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
What does this mean?

If you were convicted of fraud or lying to get one of the COVID-19 relief loans or grants that helped businesses stay afloat during the pandemic (like Paycheck Protection Program loans, Restaurant Revitalization Fund grants, or Shuttered Venue Operators grants), you would be permanently barred from getting future help from the Small Business Administration, the federal agency that offers loans and support to small businesses. This block isn't just personal — if you're an owner, officer, director, or key employee at a small business, your conviction could disqualify that entire business from receiving SBA assistance too. The one exception is disaster loans, which would still be available even to someone with this kind of conviction.
