H.R. 5348 · Social Welfare
Social Security Child Protection Act of 2025
Introduced Sep 15, 2025 · Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Finance.
What does this mean?

If a child under 14 is supposed to get a Social Security card in the mail — the government ID number used for taxes, jobs, and benefits later in life — but it gets lost or stolen before reaching them, this bill requires the Social Security Administration (the federal agency that issues these numbers and manages retirement/disability benefits) to give that child a brand-new number instead of just reissuing the same one. The idea is to protect kids from having their original number floating around and potentially misused by whoever intercepted it.
