H.R. 498 · Health
Do No Harm in Medicaid Act
Introduced Jan 16, 2025 · Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Finance.
What does this mean?

This bill would stop Medicaid — the government health insurance program that covers medical care for many low-income people and children — from paying for gender transition treatments, like certain surgeries, hormone medications, or implants, for anyone under 18. It would still allow Medicaid to cover similar treatments in other situations, such as treating early puberty, genetic or chromosomal conditions, reversing an earlier gender transition treatment, or handling a medical emergency where a major body function or the person's life is at risk, as long as a parent or guardian agrees. In short, families relying on Medicaid for a minor's gender transition care would no longer have that specific care covered by the program, though other related medical treatments would still be eligible for coverage.
