H.R. 35 · Crime and Law Enforcement
Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act
Introduced Jan 3, 2025 · Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.
What does this mean?

This law would make it a federal crime to drive away from Border Patrol agents (or other police helping them) while within 100 miles of the U.S. border. Anyone who does this and causes someone's death or serious injury would face a required minimum prison sentence — meaning a judge couldn't give a lighter punishment even if they wanted to. For immigrants who aren't U.S. citizens, being convicted of or even admitting to this crime would mean they could be denied entry, deported, and blocked from options like asylum that might otherwise let them stay in the country legally.
