The Department of Veterans Affairs—the federal agency that runs hospitals and clinics for military veterans—would be allowed to send doctors on temporary, up-to-one-year assignments to VA facilities in places like Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands, where getting enough medical staff can be harder than in the mainland U.S. These traveling doctors would work with local, non-VA doctors when needed to make sure veterans' care stays consistent and coordinated. To make these assignments appealing, the VA would be required to pay these doctors extra money, either to get them to relocate or to keep them staying in the job. In short, veterans living in these U.S. territories would gain more reliable access to VA doctors.
