H.R. 1917 · Environmental Protection
Great Lakes Mass Marking Program Act of 2025
Introduced Mar 6, 2025 · Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Environment and Public Works.
What does this mean?

Since 2010, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been tagging hatchery-raised fish before releasing them into the Great Lakes, so scientists can tell them apart from wild-born fish and track how fish populations are doing. This bill would officially write that program into law and let it expand — allowing the agency to buy more tagging equipment and hire more staff to tag and track fish on a larger scale. The information gathered would be shared with state and tribal agencies that manage fishing in the Great Lakes, helping them make decisions about restoring fish populations, keeping predator and prey species balanced, and supporting fishing-related jobs and businesses for tribes, sport anglers, and commercial fishers.
