H.R. 164 · Emergency Management
POWER Act of 2025
Introduced Jan 3, 2025 · Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
What does this mean?

When electric utilities get emergency government help to restore power after a disaster, this bill lets them also use that assistance to make repairs that reduce the risk of future damage — not just put things back the way they were. It also allows those same utilities to get additional disaster-recovery funding, through the federal program that reimburses public infrastructure repairs after disasters, for hazard-reducing upgrades on that same power equipment. In practice, this means utility companies could rebuild power lines and equipment to be sturdier or more storm-resistant, rather than just restoring them to their previous condition, and get help paying for both the repair and the upgrade at the same time.
