H.R. 1442 · Commerce
To ban the sale of products with a high concentration of sodium nitrite to individuals, and for other purposes.
Introduced Feb 18, 2025 · Read twice. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 116.
What does this mean?

Selling products containing 10% or more sodium nitrite—a chemical used in things like curing salts—would become illegal, treated the same as selling other dangerous banned products. This mainly targets concentrated sodium nitrite sold on its own, since it has reportedly been misused for self-harm; regular food items, medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics that happen to contain sodium nitrite are not affected by this ban. In practice, this would stop retailers and online sellers from offering high-purity sodium nitrite products directly to consumers.
