H.R. 1228 · Armed Forces and National Security
Prioritizing Veterans’ Survivors Act
Introduced Feb 12, 2025 · Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
What does this mean?

The Office of Survivors Assistance is the part of Veterans Affairs that's supposed to help spouses, children, and other family members of veterans understand and access the benefits they're owed after a veteran dies or is severely injured. Right now that office sits buried inside a benefits-processing division that handles pension and fiduciary paperwork; this bill moves it up to report directly to the VA Secretary's own office instead. The people affected are veterans' survivors, since the idea is that placing this office closer to the top of the agency could give it more visibility and authority when advocating for them, though the bill itself doesn't change what benefits survivors actually receive.
