In 2023, the federal agency that manages public lands (the Bureau of Land Management) blocked mining and geothermal companies from leasing about 225,000 acres of national forest land in three Minnesota counties for 20 years, in order to protect nearby lakes, rivers, and wilderness areas, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, from pollution or damage tied to mining. This bill cancels that 20-year protection, which means companies would again be allowed to seek leases to explore for and develop minerals and geothermal energy on that land. The people most directly affected are residents, businesses, and Native American communities connected to that region, along with mining and energy companies interested in operating there.
